Crowned Heads Broadway Robusto Extra – Single Loose Cigar Nashville has a reputation for producing some excellent music, although it's also given us a rather interesting cigar company. Crowned Heads, founded in 2011 by Jon Huber and Mike Conder, has always drawn inspiration from the people, places and sounds of its Tennessee home.
The Broadway Robusto Extra takes its name from Nashville's famous Broadway, a street lined with live music venues, old honky-tonks and enough neon lighting to keep the local electricity company in business for another century.
Underneath its handsome Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper sits a blend of Nicaraguan tobacco from three distinct growing regions: Estelí, Jalapa and Ometepe. The binder also comes from Jalapa, a region particularly well regarded for its aromatic tobacco.
It's a combination that gives the Broadway its rich, medium-to-full-bodied character, with flavours of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and earth, accompanied by cedar, black pepper and a little natural sweetness.
The Robusto Extra has a substantial, straight-sided profile, dressed in a dark brown wrapper with an attractive, slightly rustic appearance. Its decorative red and gold Crowned Heads band carries the company's crowned emblem, while a second band identifies the Broadway collection.
A dark blue ribbon around the foot finishes the presentation rather smartly. There's even a little Tennessee symbolism worked into the artwork, a reminder that Crowned Heads remains proud of its Nashville roots.
The cigars are handmade at the NACSA factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, where the combination of American Broadleaf and Nicaraguan tobaccos is brought together.
I've always had a soft spot for a good Broadleaf cigar. There's a richness to the tobacco that suits a fuller blend, particularly when the blender knows how to balance its earthy character with the sweeter qualities of Jalapa leaf.
Sold here as a single loose cigar, the Broadway Robusto Extra is an interesting addition to any humidor, particularly for those already familiar with Crowned Heads' more characterful blends.
And if the name Broadway puts you in the mood for a little country music, that's entirely your business. Just don't expect me to start line dancing behind the counter.
