Cornell and Diehl Sunday Picnic They’ve named it Sunday Picnic, but truth be told, we’d be happy to sit with this one any day of the week. This isn’t your overly sweet, candy-coated sort of blend. No—Cornell & Diehl have mixed something that’s refined but lively, gentle yet complex. A proper companion for a quiet afternoon in the garden or a ramble through your thoughts.
It’s a Virginia-Oriental-Perique mixture, with just the right proportions. The bright and red Virginias provide a honeyed, hay-like foundation. The Orientals (Izmir, if you're curious) bring a sort of herbal tang—a touch of the exotic, but not so much that it upstages the whole affair. Then comes the Perique with a bit of depth and plum-dark richness, never overwhelming, just grounding things nicely.
We find it smokes cool and crisp, especially in a taller bowl. And it’s cut in such a way—mostly ribbon, with a bit of rough flake and broken leaf—that packing is no trouble. You’ll get sweetness, spice, a touch of sour, and all of it in balance.
