Butz-Choquin, Saint-Claude’s pride since 1858, have always liked to show that tradition doesn’t have to be dull. The L’De Rouge 1113 is a fine example — a pear-shaped bowl with a longer shank, polished to a deep claret shine that wouldn’t look out of place in a glass at the end of the day. It’s the sort of red that looks rich without being flashy, showing off the briar’s grain beneath that smooth finish. The long bent stem keeps the smoke cool and the grip easy, it behaves as well as it looks. You could call it the Frenchman’s answer to understated style — elegant, but with a bit of confidence about it. A pipe for those who like their tradition polished up and ready for company, rather than sat gathering dust on a mantelpiece.
