Butz Choquin Cool Green There’s no shortage of pipes in the world, but Saint-Claude in France is where it all took off in the 19th century, when they first turned briar root into something worth smoking. Butz-Choquin have been at it since 1858, and you can see that long craft in the Cool Green. The bowl is honest briar, but stained a striking blue, a reminder that tradition doesn’t always mean stuck in the past. The churchwarden stem is long and slim, cooling the smoke before it reaches the mouth – the sort of pipe you’d see in the hands of old storytellers, drawn out in taverns or round the fire. These days the stem’s black acrylic, durable and easy to keep clean, fitted for a 9mm filter if you want a drier smoke. It’s a pipe with heritage at its back but a modern coat on its face – proof that Saint-Claude makers can nod to their roots whilst trying something a bit different.
