Butz-Choquin Belami Special Junior 688P Straight Apple Briar Pipe Saint-Claude’s been turning briar into pipes since the 1800s, and Butz-Choquin have been at it longer than most — since 1858, to be exact. The Belami Select 688P is a fine nod to that heritage. It’s a straight apple, compact and well-proportioned, the sort of shape that’s always been easy on the hand and kind to the pocket. The finish is a smooth walnut-brown polish that brings out the briar’s grain without getting too fancy about it. “Belami” means “good friend” — and that’s about right. It’s not one of those pipes you put on display; it’s one you smoke, day in and day out, and it never gives you any grief. A bit of French finesse wrapped round good old-fashioned practicality — you could do far worse for a daily companion.
