Balmoral has been known for its clever blends, using tobaccos from various countries. But with the Puro Nicaragua, they chose to stick to what they know best.

And Nicaragua has plenty to offer!

The Balmoral Puro Nicaragua Rothschild Masivo is crafted entirely from Nicaraguan tobacco, but it’s not all from the same place. Balmoral has sourced tobacco from four of Nicaragua’s main tobacco-growing areas, using each one plays a specific role in the blend.

Both the wrapper and binder come from Jalapa, close to the Honduran border. Jalapa’s higher altitudes and unique growing conditions are said to produce tobacco that is sweeter and more refined than some of Nicaragua’s heavier leaves. Inside, Balmoral mixes three different filler tobaccos: Ometepe, Estelí and Condega.

The Rothschild Masivo is 5 inches long with a substantial 55 ring gauge, making it a short, thick cigar packed with tobacco in its small size. It’s not box-pressed, keeping the traditional round parejo shape seen in the photo.

The smoking character is medium to medium-full, offering a rich flavour without being overpowering. Coffee and roasted notes usually lead the way, with nuts, earth and natural sweetness adding depth. As the cigar ages, wood and black pepper become more prominent, and specialist reviews have also noted cocoa, bread and darker chocolate notes emerging.

The wide ring gauge allows the different filler leaves to harmonise beautifully. You can expect a good amount of smoke and around an hour to 70 minutes from a Rothschild Masivo, depending on how fast you smoke.

Even the beautiful bands have a thoughtful design. The blue, black and gold artwork is a deliberate tribute to Nicaragua. The design incorporates elements of the country’s volcanic soils, the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the rising sun and the National Artisan Market in Masaya.

It’s a fascinating approach for Balmoral. Instead of using an exotic wrapper to grab attention, they’ve chosen four distinct Nicaraguan growing regions and invited the tobacco to share its story.
