AVO Uvezian Classic Puritos There's a rather good story behind AVO cigars, and unusually for the tobacco trade, it all starts with a piano.
Avo Uvezian! Uvezian, an Armenian-American jazz pianist and composer, travelled the world entertaining audiences before turning his attention to cigars. He eventually partnered with master blender Hendrik Kelner, creating a range that reflected Uvezian’s appreciation for the finer things in life.
The AVO Classic Puritos embody that original philosophy in a smaller cigar. Measuring just 4” with a 30 ring gauge, they offer the familiar character of the AVO Classic blend in a format that lasts about 10-15 minutes of smoking.
An Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper encases Dominican binder and filler tobaccos, producing a smooth creamy smoke with notes of cedar toasted nuts and a hint of pepper. There’s a subtle natural sweetness in the background and enough tobacco character to maintain interest.
The Classic blend is renowned for Kelner’s meticulous approach to Dominican tobacco, and these small Puritos are a testament to how a relatively small cigar can still deliver a distinctive flavour.
They’re supplied in an attractive gold-coloured metal tin of ten, featuring the AVO monogram and familiar striped decoration. This makes them convenient for keeping the cigars together while travelling, though a humidor is preferable for extended storage.
Uvezian spent much of his life behind a piano, and it’s understandable why he appreciated the similarities between music and tobacco blending. Both require a very keen ear for detail.
