Pipe Filters and Gauzes
Filters and gauzes do two simple jobs: keep the smoke cool and dry, and keep bits of tobacco where they belong.
Filters sit in the stem. Activated charcoal, balsa and paper filters absorb moisture, so the smoke is cooler and drier, with less gurgle and less tongue bite. Buy the size your pipe takes: 9mm and 6mm are the most common, and the maker will tell you which. Metal condensers (stingers), such as Dr Plumb's, do the same job and can be cleaned and reused.
Gauzes, or screens, sit at the bottom of the bowl. They stop loose tobacco being drawn into the stem, which keeps the draw clear and the tobacco burning evenly.
