The K77 is a tall one — what you’d rightly call a Chimney. Not a shape you see every day, and all the better for it. There’s something rather satisfying about a pipe with a bit of height to it, especially for those who enjoy a slower, more contemplative burn. This one’s from the revived Ropp workshop in Saint-Claude, France, a name that stretches back to the late 1800s when Charles Ropp first set about turning local cherrywood and horn into export pipes for the European trade. The modern output, thankfully, hasn’t lost the old character — they’re still using original lathes and sanding forms from the golden era, with finishes that favour quiet utility over polish and flash.
The bowl here rises high like a mill chimney — narrow, cylindrical, and designed to keep the ember stable. Excellent for Virginia blends or long-burning shag, particularly if you like a bit of warmth on the fingers come winter. The sandblast is nicely done — not too deep, but enough to break up the surface and give it a touch of age from the first smoke onwards. It’ll darken over time, especially round the rim, which is half the charm of briar left to live a bit.
The horn stem, as with the rest of this Vintage line, is something rather special. No two are alike. They’ve a natural grain and colour shift — pale cream to honey, sometimes with a trace of translucent amber — and will mellow with use. If you're used to acrylic, horn's got a gentler feel in the mouth and a more organic look overall. It suits the pipe.
No filter, just a clear draw straight through. Best suited to someone who doesn’t mind a longer bowl and knows their way around a tamper. One for slow days, quiet evenings, and strong tea.
