Peterson’s System pipes have been doing their job for well over a century, which rather suggests they got it right the first time.
This 317 keeps things compact and practical, pairing the familiar bent billiard shape with the System’s internal reservoir. The idea is straightforward enough—moisture is drawn away from the smoke before it reaches the mouth. In practice, it means a cooler, drier experience without the need for filters or fiddling.
The spigot mount is where things take a slightly more robust turn. Reinforced with nickel, it allows the pipe to be broken down even while warm—useful if you’re the impatient sort—and adds a bit of durability where it counts.
The sandblast finish is properly done: deep enough to give texture and grip, but not so aggressive that it feels crude. It suits the pipe, gives it a bit of character, and avoids the overly polished look that wouldn’t quite fit here anyway.
Then there’s the P-Lip stem, directing smoke toward the roof of the mouth rather than straight onto the tongue. Some swear by it, others take a moment to adjust—but it’s very much part of what makes a Peterson a Peterson.
All told, this is a workhorse pipe with a bit of engineering behind it. Not flashy, not delicate—just thoughtfully made, and built to be used.
