There’s a quiet dignity about Glengarry Flake, one of Gawith Hoggarth’s more restrained offerings from their cherished stable of Lakeland blends. While it shares a family resemblance with the bolder entries in the Kendal canon, Glengarry stands apart with a more subtle touch, a kind of refined modesty that makes it one of my personal favourites for afternoon reflection.
The foundation is pure Virginia leaf, pressed into thick flake form the old-fashioned way — you can see the heritage in every slice. But what truly sets it apart is the delicate application of Lakeland essence. Not a full perfume house like Ennerdale, mind you. Rather, a gentle breath of floral-sweet top note — faintly geranium, perhaps a trace of bergamot — that lingers just long enough to lift the natural grassy and haylike notes of the leaf.
The smoke itself is smooth, slightly tangy, and mellow with that unmistakable Kendal minerality in the background. It rubs out willingly for those who prefer a soft fill, though I find folding a flake offers the most rewarding burn. A medium strength affair — enough to satisfy without waylaying the senses — and ideal for those either easing into Lakelands or simply looking for a civilised flake with a bit of distinction.
For me, it pairs beautifully with a cup of strong tea, a dog at one’s feet, and an open window to let the sea air drift through. Unfussy, unhurried, unforgettable.
