The apple shape has always struck me as one of the more companionable designs—rounded, reassuring, and a touch less formal than the billiard. This bent example from Dr Plumb follows that tradition rather well.

The bowl sits full in the hand, with a gentle curve that feels natural enough whether you’re holding it or letting it hang. The bend in the stem helps with that, taking the weight off slightly and making it an easy pipe to keep on without much fuss.

As expected in this series, you’ve got a meerschaum-lined chamber, which takes some of the ceremony out of owning a new pipe. It smokes cleanly from the outset and spares you the usual cautious break-in. Not revolutionary, but undeniably practical—and Dr Plumb have been quietly getting on with this approach for years.

This particular model accepts a 9mm filter, which will suit those who prefer a cooler, drier smoke with a bit more control over moisture. If you’re used to that system, it’s a welcome inclusion; if not, it’s easily left aside.

The finish is a straightforward light stain, showing a pleasant, if unassuming, grain. Nothing theatrical about it—just honest briar doing its job. Which, in truth, is rather the point.
