The DB Mariner is an all time classic pipe. For some reason these disappeared from the UK market a few years ago and we could not get hold of them for love nor money despite numerous requests. Well good news folks the DB Mariner has made a re-appearance! DB stands for Design Berlin so for those that aren’t that good at Geography these pipes are German made. I’m sure you don’t need us to educate you on the reputation of German engineering! The DB Mariner is no exception!
DB Mariner 1 Golden 20
The DB Mariner I Golden Briar No.20 is a classic half bent Zulu. All the DB Mariners have substantial walls but the 20 goes even further with 12mm at the top so to overheat this pipe would take a real pipe abuser. The Zulu shape is very elegant but in a pipe of this size does not look overly dainty. They are not made to be dainty and light so your dentist would not be happy of you walked round town with this pipe hung from your mouth for days on ened. These pipes are made for large full bodied pipe fills when one has a spare couple of hours in front of the fire (usually a 3 bar fire in the shed looking over the garden nowadays) The Mariner is undoubtedly a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. The Briar is finished in what we think is one of the most classy light stains we have seen before 2 matching sets of brass rings are impeccably engineered in the stem and on the top of the briar bowl, which some say is to help prevent burning the top of the pipe and others say is simply to add to the beauty. Whether you believe the first or not the latter is undoubtably correct. The Mariner comes with the 9mm absorbent filter system which has gained much popularity over the last 5 years.
9mm Absorbent Filter
The DB Mariner are designed for use with any 9mm Absorbent Filters. The larger diameter allows more smoke to pass through the filter, with less restriction, which makes for a better draw compared to the 6mm filters. The highly absorbent filters have a very high surface area resulting in excellent absorption of the tar as the smoke passes through without affecting draw or flavour.
No mess no fuss, simply throw the filter in the bin when it turns a dark brown colour.
The pipes have a standard 9mm bore so can be used with any brand of 9mm filter if preferred. Alternatively the filter can be removed all together for smokers who prefer a totally un-restricted full on smoke.
