Charles Rattray’s Briar Pipes
Charles Rattray’s master blenders have an impeccable worldwide reputation for their unique tobacco blends and unrivalled character. You can be forgiven for not knowing that Rattray’s also produce pipes as they were only released onto the general market in 2012. Their pipes were formerly reserved for exclusive sale in their Perth shop but they have answered many prayers by releasing these stunning pipes to retailers worldwide.
Charles Rattrays Old Gowrie Number 2 Briar Pipe
The Old Gowrie range is designed with the classic smoker in mind who appreciates a quality briar with discreet touches to keep their smoking understated. It is a classic sandblast finish on top of a quality grain. Many pipe manufacturers reserve the less attractive grains for sandblasting but not Rattray’s. Sandblasting picks out the Grain if done well and a good grain will be enhanced by experienced pipe makers. The un-blasted elements of the Briar are polished with a rich brown stain for a discreet yet effective feature.
The Old Gowrie No.2 is a classic full bent Billiard of good proportions with a good deep bowl for a good fill although the bore isn’t overly large so the pipe can be smoked with a smaller fill when required. The briar walls are thick enough to help keep the pipe cool, while the long stem ensures a cool and smooth smoke. The tapered mouthpiece has a good wide tip to aid grip and reduce strain on the teeth.
9mm Absorbent Filter
The Charles Rattray’s Old Gowrie pipes are designed for use with the any 9mm absorbent stem filters. The larger diameter allows more smoke to pass through the filter, with less restriction, which makes for a better draw compared to the 6mm filters. The highly absorbent filters have a very high surface area resulting in excellent absorption of the tar as the smoke passes through without affecting draw or flavour.
The pipes have a standard 9mm bore so can be used with any brand of 9mm filter if preferred. Alternatively the filter can be removed altogether for smokers who prefer a totally un-restricted full on smoke.
