The 1817 Curved Rhodesian carries one of the more distinctive bowl profiles in the pipe world. That twin bead line circling the bowl isn’t just decorative—it’s a hallmark of the Rhodesian form, a shape that emerged as a softer, more rounded cousin to the Bulldog, but no less considered in its proportions.
Barling would have been producing pipes of this character during the height of the British pipe-making tradition—late 19th into early 20th century—when shape charts weren’t just suggestions, but standards to be adhered to. There’s a certain discipline to it, and you can still see that here.
The Very Finest finish does exactly what it ought to: lets the briar speak. A warm, natural polish, showing off the grain rather than masking it. No theatrics—just good wood, properly finished. The bead lines are crisp, the bowl nicely balanced, and that gentle curve through the stem makes for an easy, natural hold.
It’s a shape with intent, but not fussiness. A thinking man’s pipe, if you like.
