Barling Marylebone Bark 9mm Rhodesian Briar Pipe
Barling is one of those old English names that still means something. Benjamin Barling started out as a silversmith in 1812, and the brand built its reputation on proper craftsmanship, restrained styling, and pipes that were made to be smoked rather than merely admired. The Marylebone line nods back to that original London district where it all began, which is a nice touch without feeling forced.
This 1817 shape is a Rhodesian, and a very recognisable one at that. Broad, rounded bowl, beadlines around the waist, and a profile that somehow manages to look both sturdy and tidy at the same time.
The Bark finish suits it beautifully. There’s a crisp, striated rustication running through the bowl and shank, giving it a bit of texture and grip without making it feel overly rugged. It looks like a pipe that wants to be used, which is usually a good sign.
The black acrylic fishtail stem keeps things clean, and that little sterling silver lion head inlay gives it just enough Barling identity without turning into jewellery.
Altogether, it’s a proper English Rhodesian — traditional, dependable, and carrying just enough character to stop it feeling stiff.
