Barling Benjamin Ye Old Wood 9mm Straight Billiard Briar Pipe
Barling is one of those old English names that still carries a bit of weight. Benjamin Barling started out as a silversmith in the early 1800s, and the brand built its reputation on well-made pipes with proper English manners rather than cheap theatrics.
The Benjamin line nods back to that founder, and this one keeps things very traditional indeed. Shape 1812 is a straight billiard — the most recognisable pipe shape going, and for good reason. Balanced proportions, clean lines, and no nonsense about it.
The bowl stands tall and tidy, the shank runs straight and true, and the fishtail stem keeps everything looking neat and controlled. It’s the sort of shape that never really goes out of favour because there was never anything wrong with it in the first place.
Finished in Barling’s Ye Old Wood stain, the briar carries a deep red tone with plenty of grain flickering underneath. Smooth, polished, and just lively enough to stop it feeling too formal.
If you like classic English pipes that know exactly what they are, this is a very easy one to warm to.
