The Dunhill White Spot Cumberland 3117 is a fine example of what happens when patience, skill, and a healthy dose of British bloody-mindedness come together. Dunhill’s sandblasted finishes are a story in themselves — each one revealing the life of the briar like rings in an old tree. You can see the decades in it, and if you’re the sentimental sort, you might even imagine the soil it grew in.

That handsome Cumberland stem isn’t plastic made to look clever — it’s proper vulcanite with a reddish swirl Dunhill’s been using since the 1970s. Warm in the hand, cool on the smoke, and smooth on the teeth. The Group 3 bowl gives you just enough time for a satisfying evening smoke — perhaps a bit of Squadron Leader while the radio hums quietly in the background.
