  Dunhill pipes are highly regarded as being the epitome of the pipe smoking world. There is no better pipe than a Dunhill. The Mediterraneans finest Briar is reserved for Dunhill and no expense is spared in scouring the markets to source the best briar. Briar is a natural product and it is only when the root is carved or finished after a long period of seasoning that the grain pattern is revealed. If the grain pattern doesn’t quite match up to the very strict standards to warrant the Dunhill stamp it simply doesn’t get stamped.

  So what do they do with this very high quality briar that could make an exceptional pipe but doesn’t quite warrant the Dunhill stamp? They sell it for very expensive kindling right? Erm no!
  In 1922 Dunhill opened a parent brand where Dunhills craftsmen finish the pipes to a near Dunhill standard and mark it as a Parker instead. So if you want a exceptional smoking pipe that is cosmetic perfection you buy a Dunhill. If you want an exceptional smoke and can live with near perfect aesthetics with a substantially reduced price tag you buy a Parker!

  The Parker Bruyere is the best of the Dunhill failings. The light, warm yellow stain isn’t deep enough to hide any marks in the grain so the bowl must not have any visible flaws or disruptions and the pattern in the grain needs to be a good grade. So this is as close to Dunhills standards as you can get without entering the £200 market!

  Parker Bruyere 395
  The Parker Bruyere 395 is a classic straight Apple. Probably the most popular shape for smokers of straight pipes the apple shaped bowl is arguably the most comfortable to hold and provides thickness in the bowl where the pipe holds it’s heat the most. The Bruyere 395 has a good thickness in the wall without going over the top to keep the weight to a more teeth friendly level. A fairly deep bowl holds a good fill and also helps keep the char shielded from the wind to prevent flare ups. The straight apple has been a favourite for many decades and it looks like it will be a firm favourite in smokers hearts for many years to come as straights seem to be making a comeback.
